Drone attack halts another Russian oil refinery

The Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in the Rostov Oblast in Russia has temporarily halted operations following a drone attack on the night of 24-25 September.

Details: Slyusar said that the plant sustained damage during the attack. Russian authorities claimed that around 50 drones have been destroyed over the region.

The Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery processes approximately 5 million tonnes of oil per year or roughly 100,000 barrels per day. The bulk of its production is designated for export.

Background:

• Explosions were heard in the Russian cities of Ulyanovsk and Perm on the night of 24-25 September. A factory and an oil refinery came under attack.
• In December 2024, Ukrainska Pravda reported that the Novoshakhtinsk plant shut down both of its primary crude processing units following a strike by Ukrainian drones.
