Quote: "Another diplomatic victory for Ukraine at the UN. Ukrainian candidate Anton Symkovych has today, 1 October, been elected to the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture for the period 2027-2030. Our warmest congratulations to Anton Symkovych on his election!"
Details: Melnyk said the election took place during the 11th Meeting of States Parties to the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture.
Quote: "The competition was serious: 22 candidates from 21 countries around the world were competing for 13 vacant seats. Following the first round of voting, candidates from Ghana, Chile, Greece, Lebanon, Hungary, Montenegro, Togo, Uruguay, Peru, Latvia, Croatia and Moldova were also elected to the Subcommittee."
Details: Melnyk noted that the election was particularly significant for Ukraine because thousands of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians unlawfully detained by Russia continue to suffer torture and other forms of ill-treatment.
He added that it also represented international recognition of the professionalism and expertise of Ukrainian human rights experts.
Ukraine received 60 votes and secured its election in the first round of voting.
