Details: Zelenskyy said Germany has allocated a comprehensive assistance package for Ukraine totalling over €1.3 billion.

Quote from Zelenskyy: "It includes weapons that will help us now, as well as support for our energy sector ahead of winter – an important energy package."

Details: Zelenskyy noted that the package includes funding for the production of new interceptor drones specifically designed to target jet-powered Shahed loitering munitions that Russia uses in daily terror attacks on Ukraine. According to Merz, approximately €350 million will go towards energy assistance.

The German chancellor stressed that the package will rapidly and tangibly strengthen Ukraine's air defence and that this reinforcement is urgently needed. He added that the assistance would help mitigate the impact of Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and, above all, help Ukrainians get through the coming winter.

Background:

  • On 4 October, Merz visited the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv, which was damaged by a Russian strike. There, he called on Russian ruler Vladimir Putin to stop the attacks on Ukraine and demonstrate a willingness to negotiate.
  • For his part, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced "important agreements" between Ukraine and Germany to strengthen defence capabilities.
