Details: Orpo described the agreement as a terrible disappointment.
However, the Finnish prime minister noted that the agreed volume of diesel fuel represented only a small proportion of US consumption and that it remained unclear whether the supplies could actually be delivered.
He said he did not believe the agreement would ultimately have a significant impact on either the United States or the global market.
Background:
- US President Donald Trump said the previous day that he had spoken with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and reached an agreement with him on supplies of Russian diesel fuel to the US and global markets.
- Axios reported that Trump decided to strike a deal with Russia on diesel fuel after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ignored half a dozen US requests to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries.
- Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner also reportedly threatened to cut off intelligence sharing with Ukraine during talks with the Ukrainian team over the strikes on Russian oil refineries.
