European Parliament defence committee chair: US can no longer be relied on

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Security and Defence, has said that US President Donald Trump "has sided with a murderer" following his remarks about his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Details: Strack-Zimmermann criticised Trump for calling for Zelenskyy to step down, stressing that such decisions must be made exclusively by the Ukrainian people.
"If Trump calls on Zelenskyy to step down, he is clearly siding with a murderer. Only the Ukrainian people can decide who leads Ukraine in free elections, not the White House, and certainly not the Kremlin," she stressed.
The German MEP added that Russian ruler Vladimir Putin must be brought before the Hague tribunal and that his victims must receive appropriate support.
Strack-Zimmermann said Trump is weakening the West by attacking its allies. As a result, she argued, Europe could no longer rely on the US as a partner.
Quote: "By once again attacking allies and democratic institutions, Trump is weakening the West and undermining democracy. Many Americans share this view. Europe must therefore remain firmly on course and support Ukraine, because the US can no longer be relied on."
Background:
- On 10 October, Trump accused Zelenskyy of being unwilling to end the war, saying that "it's time for Ukraine to get a new president".
- Following Trump's remarks, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that such decisions must be made by the Ukrainian people.
- On 9 October, Trump said he had spoken to Putin and reached an agreement with him on supplying Russian diesel fuel to the US and global markets.
- Axios reported that Trump decided to make a deal with Russia after Zelenskyy ignored half a dozen US requests to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries.
