Details: Kiesewetter stressed that Russian oil refineries are legitimate military targets for Ukraine.

Kiesewetter said that Ukraine had hit legitimate targets belonging to Russia with its targeted strikes on Russian oil refineries and was effectively helping to weaken Russia's war machine by applying "long-range sanctions".

He added that Europe and Germany should therefore encourage Ukraine to continue destroying relevant targets in Russia, as this was in the interests of European security.

Background:

  • On 9 October, US President Donald Trump said he had spoken with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and reached an agreement with him on the supply of Russian diesel fuel to the US and global markets.
  • The Trump-Putin agreement sparked outrage in Ukraine and European capitals.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Trump's decision to unilaterally lift sanctions on Russia and allow it to export diesel fuel was unfair and dishonest.
  • Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal described the US president's decision as a major mistake and called for increased support for Ukraine so that it could reduce Russian oil refineries to rubble.
