The Kremlin has said that consultations are still ongoing regarding the so-called energy ceasefire with Ukraine previously announced by US President Donald Trump.

Details: When asked to confirm Trump's statement that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an energy ceasefire, Peskov said that contacts were ongoing.

"As soon as we have any information on this matter, we will be sure to let you know," he added.

Peskov declined to say who the contacts were with – the US, Ukraine or both – saying he had nothing further to add.

Asked about Ukraine's need for a 60-day ceasefire in order to hold elections, Peskov merely repeated Russia's claim that it was seeking not a ceasefire but a lasting peace. He said Russia was prepared to do everything possible to achieve this.

Background:

  • On 9 October, Trump said that he had spoken with Putin and reached an agreement on supplies of Russian diesel fuel.
  • On 10 October, Trump said it was time for Ukraine to have a new president who could reach an agreement with Russia.
  • On 11 October, Trump claimed that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire.
  • Zelenskyy later reported that, after Trump's announcement, Russian forces struck Kharkiv's CHP-5 [a combined heat and power plant] and a power plant in Kyiv.
  • On Monday 12 October, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine has only one oil refinery and that the key issue for Ukraine in any energy ceasefire is therefore an end to Russian strikes on power plants and the energy grid.
