Details: The European Commission disbursed the €2.86 billion as part of the defence component of a €90 billion loan. The funds will be used to purchase drones, air defence equipment, missiles, radars, electronic warfare systems and ammunition.
"As Russia stalls on the front lines, it continues to escalate its aerial attacks – cruelly targeting Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. Europe's steadfast support matters more than ever to help Ukraine protect its skies and save lives," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The Commission noted that as Ukraine prepares for its fourth winter since Russia's full-scale invasion, the urgent delivery of defence equipment will ensure that Ukraine's Armed Forces can protect civilians and cities from Russian attacks.
Since 2022, the EU and its member states have provided Ukraine with a total of €231.5 billion in support, including €3.8 billion from proceeds generated by frozen Russian assets.
Background:
- On 11 October, following a phone call with von der Leyen, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the EU will provide Ukraine with approximately €3 billion in military support this week.
- On 18 September, the EU transferred a €3.3 billion tranche to Ukraine under the €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan.
