Details: TASS has cited Gerasimov as saying that Russian forces have "begun massive strikes on Ukraine's energy facilities".

Russia's Defence Ministry said as long ago as 30 August that it was preparing to conduct large-scale strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Gerasimov's statement comes as large-scale power supply disruptions are being caused by Russian strikes on Rivne and surrounding areas on 16 October and serious damage to the power grid in Lutsk.

Ukraine's state-owned electricity transmission operator, Ukrenergo, has said that following Russian strikes on thermal power plants that were supposed to be operating in winter, its forecasts for winter have been somewhat worsened, although the company does not assess the situation as critical.

Background: On the morning of 16 October, further power outages were recorded in Kyiv and eight regions following Russian attacks.
