Speaking at a plenary session of the EU summit on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary to allow grain to be transported through their territories. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has said he sees no reason to oppose it.

Details: Magyar noted that a well-established procedure for grain transit had been in place three or four years ago but had since ceased to operate. He added that, during their one-on-one meeting, Zelenskyy had said it would be a great help if maize could be transported by rail to Western Europe in sealed wagons.

Magyar said he told Zelenskyy that there are, naturally, no obstacles to this, provided Hungary is used solely as a transit country.

Background:

  • On 16 October, Zelenskyy held his first official meeting with Magyar. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the EU summit in Brussels and was held one-on-one.
  • Following the meeting with Zelenskyy, Magyar said it is in the interests of both countries to put political and economic relations on a new footing.
  • Zelenskyy described his meeting with Magyar as "very good".
