Kremlin says peace settlement impossible without "someone responsible" from Kyiv
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said that a peace settlement in Ukraine is "impossible without the participation of someone from Kyiv who is prepared to take responsibility".
Source: Peskov, as quoted by Russian media
Quote: "As for a settlement, you know that the American side continues its mediation and peace efforts, which we greatly appreciate. But, of course, there is no doubt that a final settlement is impossible without the participation of someone from Kyiv who is prepared to take responsibility."
Details: Russian media reported that the Kremlin spokesperson made the comment in response to a question about whether Russia believed a peace settlement in Ukraine could be reached without representatives of Kyiv taking part in the negotiations.
Background:
- In August, Axios reported that CIA Director John Ratcliffe, during a secret trip to Moscow, had reportedly proposed holding a trilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
- Peskov said that a meeting between Zelenskyy, Putin and Trump would only be possible to "formalise agreements".
- Peskov also accused the Ukrainian side of being unwilling to "engage in a genuine settlement", by which Russia usually means Ukraine's capitulation and acceptance of all of Russia's demands.
