Details: According to the sources, the Italian government has requested information regarding the potential involvement of foreign provocateurs, including Russian ones, in the protests that have swept European cities in recent weeks.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto previously stated that the unrest that broke out in Milan and other regions of the country over the weekend was the result of hybrid warfare against the West.

Background:

  • On 17 October, major Italian cities were swept by anti-government protests. They were organised following the example of larger demonstrations in France, which, during a previously announced "social mobilisation" of the population, escalated into clashes with police, violence and looting.
  • On Sunday, 18 October, Italian police detained over 200 people during the second day of protests in Milan.
  • Several hundred military personnel will now be deployed in Milan to tighten security in the city.
  • Media reports indicate that the possibility of imposing a curfew was discussed at an emergency meeting of the Italian government.
