Details: Rescue workers unexpectedly came across the cat five days after search and rescue operations began at the site of the collapsed five-storey building. A video posted by the SES shows that the feline had been trapped under the debris of a concrete structure.
Seeing its first humans in several days, the frightened pet meowed as SES personnel freed it from under the rubble of the destroyed building. The cat was successfully and safely extricated and later returned to its owners.
Quote from the SES: "At moments like this, it really hits you that every life matters. And even when you're surrounded by so much pain, being able to save another life gives you the strength to do your work.
This small fluffy resident has been given another chance of a safe tomorrow."
Background:
- On the night of 16-17 October, the Russians attacked a residential district in Sloviansk, damaging nine multi-storey buildings, two of which were partially destroyed.
- One body was found under the rubble and 10 other local residents aged between 39 and 85 were injured. They sustained blast injuries, concussion, shrapnel wounds, bruises, lacerations, abrasions and contusions.
- Forty-one-year-old Anatolii Hopka, who had served in the SES for over 16 years, was killed in the attack. As head of the energy and heat generation service, Anatolii had kept people safe and ensured that rescue units were prepared to carry out their tasks.
- On the night of 23-24 May, volunteers rescued a cat named Artemida that had spent three days under rubble. Artemida was exhausted and had sustained burns. Despite the vets' best efforts, she later died.
