Romny Mayor ‘Caught With ₴50,000 Bribe’

Mayor of Romny, a town in Sumy oblast, Serhiy Salahun was caught accepting a ₴50,000 bribe, the press service of the Military Prosecutor’s Office of the Central Region informed on August 18, not mentioning the name of the mayor.

"The mayor extorted and received this money from the regional manager of a company for granting approval to construct, use and maintain computer and cable networks in Romny," the statement says.

According to the Military Prosecutor’s Office, the mayor first received ₴10,000 for including this question on the agenda of a Romny council meeting. He was arrested when he was receiving the second ‘tranche’ of ₴40,000.

The question of issuing the official suspicion, applying detention as a pretrial restrictive measure, and suspending the mayor from his position is currently being decided.
