According to the press service: "Kherson is encircled by the occupiers. No one can leave. No one can enter. Flour for bread making is running out, there are issues with medicine and fuel supplies. Businesses have stopped working, many people have lost their jobs. But the local government is helping people who are not able to buy food.

Kherson citizens are supporting one another, organising mutual aid centres, getting out to clear debris and tidy up the city."

Details: The city government reports that Russian soldiers are breaking into people’s homes and abducting public figures, priests, and even one municipal theatre director.

Russian soldiers are also attempting to disperse all rallies organised in support of Ukraine.

The city council insists that all 300,000 Kherson residents – representing 100 nationalities – are united in stating that "Kherson is Ukraine!" and calling on Russian occupiers to get off Ukrainian land.

The press service reports that ethnic Russians who lived in Kherson prior to the invasion of the occupying forces of the Russian Federation are switching to adopting Ukrainian as their language so as not to speak the language of the invaders.

Moreover, the Ukrainian flag is still flying over the city council building.

Background:

  • On Sunday, 3 April Kherson residents gathered for another demonstration, chanting "Kherson is Ukraine!" and flying blue-and-yellow flags. During a demonstration on 27 March, Russian troops used tear gas grenades against peaceful protesters.
  • Earlier, Russian occupiers were reported to be raiding the outskirts of Kherson, where they were confiscating cars from local residents and carrying out illegal checks of people’s documents.
  • On 24 March, the City Council building was decorated with a Ukrainian flag the size of the entire facade of the building.
