Zelenskyy: the status of a candidate will bring victory over Russia closer

The European Commission's proposal on EU candidate status will help bring Ukraine closer to victory in the war.

This is the opinion of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Pravda reports.

In his Twitter, the head of state welcomed the positive conclusion of the European Commission on granting Ukraine the candidate status.

He noted that "this is the first step towards EU membership, which, of course, will bring our victory closer."

Zelenskyy thanked European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and each member of the commission for a historic decision and expressed hope that the EU summit would approve this decision the next week.

On 17 June, the European Commission officially recommended that Ukraine be granted EU membership candidate status for accession to the European Union.

A formal status decision for Ukraine is expected to be made at a summit of EU leaders on 23 June.
