The lives of 32 people from media were taken by the war with Russia: the list of the dead

During the 103 days since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has killed 32 members of the media. Eight of them died while carrying out their duties.

The information about this was published on the page of the Georgy Gongadze Prize and the Institute of Mass Media.

Another 24 media workers were killed as a result of shelling, torture or while serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The first victim among colleagues was Yevhen Sakun, the Live TV channel cameraman. On 1 March, a rocket attack on the Kyiv TV tower took his life.

In two weeks in Irpin, the Russians fired on a car with Brent Reno, documentary filmmaker and Time correspondent, at a checkpoint.

Pierre Zakzewski, Fox News cameraman, was killed on 14 March during artillery shelling in the village of Horenka in Kyiv Oblast. Oleksandra Kuvshynova, Ukrainian producer and Fox News journalist, died along with him.

The occupiers also killed photojournalist Maksym Levin. He disappeared on 13 March, his body was found on 1 April in the Kyiv region.

Oksana Baulina, the Insider journalist, who left Russia under pressure, died on 23 March under Russian shelling in Kyiv.

Mantas Kvedaravičius, Lithuanian director and documentary filmmaker, was detained by Russians at a checkpoint due to his Lithuanian passport. Yevhen Bal was taken prisoner with him. They were tortured to death.

Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff, French BFMTV journalist, died in the Luhansk region on 30 May as a result of Russian shelling.

Oleksandr Lytkin, KNK Media journalist, died during the Russian shelling of the village of Romanivka near Irpin.

Dealerbek Shakirov, a citizen journalist of the news weekly "Navkolo tebe" [Around You], was shot dead with an automatic weapon on 26 February in the suburbs of Kherson.

Serhii Pushchenko, graphic artist and painter, culturologist, journalist, volunteer and anti-terrorist operation veteran, died on 2 March in Vasylkiv together with his mates from the territorial defence forces.

Viktor Dudar, the military journalist, was killed in a fight near Mykolaiv by the Russian invaders.

Pavlo Li, the actor and host of the Dom TV channel, joined the units of territorial defence at the beginning of the war; he died on 6 March near Irpin during the evacuation of people.

The life of Viktor Diedov, Sigma TV cameraman, was cut short due to the shelling of a house in Mariupol on 11 March.

Oleg Yakunin, editor of the Zaporizhzhia website misto.zp.ua, died on 18 March while defending Ukraine from the Russian occupiers.

Natalia Kharakoz, the head of the Azovie literary club, died in Mariupol, which was blocked by the Russians.

Vira Hyrych, Radio Svoboda producer, was killed by a Russian rocket that hit her apartment in Kyiv on 28 April.

Oleksandr Makhov, a journalist of Ukraina, Ukraina24, and Dom TV channels, died in battle on 4 May.

Near the village of Yahidne in the Chernihiv region, the Russians killed Roman Nezhyborets, the video engineer of the Dytynets Chernihiv channel.

Zoreslav Zamoiskyi, journalist of the "Information Portal" and "Hromada pryirpinnia" Internet resources, died as a result of torture in Bucha. 

Oksana Haidar (Ruda Pani), journalist and blogger, died during the Russian artillery shelling of the village of Shevchenkove, Brovary district, Kyiv region, between 11 and 12 March.

The following people were killed in the battle:

  • Kostiantyn Kits, Avers Lutsk channel cameraman; 
  • Vitalii Derekh, journalist and serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine;
  • Roman Zhuk, photographer, videographer from Mukachevo;
  • Maksym Medynskyi, communication specialist; 
  • Yevhen Starynets, former manager of the Suspilne Cherkasy;
  • Denys Kotenko, employee of the press service of the Ministry of Veterans;
  • Yurii Oliinyk, 24 channel cameraman;
  • Serhii Zaikovskyi, publicist, historian, translator.
