A barely alive dog that had been beaten by the occupiers has been found in a pit containing rubbish near Makariv in the Kyiv region. The animal was covered with explosives and was left to die.

Now the dog needs long-term rehabilitation, reports ZooPatrul [ZooPatrol (Ukrainian pet rescue organisation - ed.].

According to the volunteers, the only thing that saved the dog from death was that he could not walk. If he had moved, the explosives would have killed the animal. Animal rights activists have named the red dog Lys [Fox].

"His story is very scary and cruel - the orcs [Russian soldiers] beat the dog and placed explosives on him. Lys was found near Makariv. He was lying in a pit containing rubbish. People wanted to get him out, but they were lucky to notice that the dog had been booby-trapped," the organisation says.

It is difficult to say now how long the animal was in the rubbish pit. As soon as the locals noticed him, they called out bomb-disposal experts. They removed the explosives from Lys and handed him over to volunteers. Now the animal is at a clinic for rehabilitation.

At the same time, the animal has feeling in his injured paws, so there is hope that they will partially recover.

"Despite everything, Lys is very trusting, although a bit fearful. He is called a peacemaker in the rehabilitation centre, because when one of the animals does not get along, he always tries to resolve this conflict," the volunteers say.

According to ZooPatrul, the animal, who was abused by Russian soldiers, now needs long-term rehabilitation. This rehabilitation will cost 37,000 hryvnias, but anyone can contribute to the fund.

"Run, Lys, Run! Our heroic dog Lys really wants to hear these words," the volunteers emphasise.
