Hostomel suffers $259 million worth of damage due to Russian occupiers

The city of Hostomel in Kyiv Oblast has suffered over 9.5 billion hryvnias [approximately $258.7 million - ed.] worth of damage as a result of the actions carried out by Russian occupying forces. The city’s industrial facilities and residential infrastructure have sustained the most damage.

Details: Starting on 24 February 2022, Hostomel was a key city on the Russian forces’ approach to Kyiv: it was shelled by the Russian ground forces and subjected to aerial bombing; Russian landing troops made atattempted landings at Hostomel’s Antonov airfield. Severe fighting for the city and the airfield ensued. The Ukrainian Armed Forces liberated the city on 2 April 2022.

The city occupies an area of 1,995 hectares and had a population of almost 17,000 residents prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

At present, 4,553 buildings in Hostomel – 40% of the total number of buildings in the city – have sustained some form of damage. Among those damaged buildings, 12% have been completely destroyed and another 7.9% sustained significant damage.

According to the available estimates, the city has suffered a total of 9.5 billion hryvnias [approximately $258.7 million - ed.] worth of damage as a result of the actions carried out by Russian occupying forces. The city’s industrys sustained 5.4 billion hryvnias [$147 million - ed.] worth of damage; residential infrastructure has suffered another 3.3 billion hryvnias [$89.8 million - ed.] worth of damage, and the city’s social infrastructure has lost 842 million hryvnias [$22.9 million - ed.].

Over 4,000 residential buildings, 318 industrial facilities, and 181 social infrastructure facilities have been destroyed in Hostomel. A total of 432,700 square metres worth of private houses have been damaged, 429,500 square metres of apartment buildings, and 97,100 square metres worth of outbuildings.

Background: The Rebuildua project had earlier estimated the extent of losses sustained by other towns and villages in Kyiv Oblast, including Irpen, Bucha, Horenka and Moshchun.
