Ukraine has conducted preliminary consultations with NATO regarding application for NATO membership.

Mykhailo Podoliak, Adviser to the Head of the President’s Office, announced this on the national 24/7 news broadcast.

According to Interfax-Ukraine (as reported by European Pravda), Podoliak said that "preliminary consultations have indeed been taking place for quite some time at the level of different experts and heads of states, as well as with the NATO alliance".

Podoliak stated that "intensive negotiations" with NATO are currently underway regarding Ukraine’s accession.

Earlier in the day on Friday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine has applied for NATO membership under an accelerated procedure. He also called on Western partners to implement the suggested security guarantees proposed by Ukraine, as set out in the Kyiv Security Compact.

The NATO Secretary General stated that Ukraine had a right to apply for membership, but that at the moment, assistance was a priority.
