Quote from Zakharova: "The Russian Federation is fully committed to the principle of the inadmissibility of nuclear war. We have repeatedly said and confirmed this. There can be no winners in such a war - one should never be unleashed."

Details: Zakharova also stated that the degree of "nuclear rhetoric" is being increased allegedly by "NATO-centric structures, NATO-centric countries and those who serve their interests in the information sphere", although she does not mention the threats made by Russian leaders, and in particular by President Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev, the former president and now Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.

"We have no intention of participating in this creepy discourse devoted to ramping up nuclear rhetoric," the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said, adding that she would not read out "doctrinal documents on this issue" because the country's position "has not undergone any changes."

Background:

  • Following the announcement of partial mobilisation in Russia, President Vladimir Putin once again threatened Western countries with nuclear weapons. "If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. This is not a bluff," Putin said.
  • Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, believes that Russia can launch a nuclear strike on Ukraine with impunity, since NATO countries will not take retaliatory steps, worrying about their own security. Medvedev also threatened the world with the start of WWIII and the disappearance of a significant number of Ukrainians.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine does not believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin is bluffing when he suggests Russia might deploy nuclear weapons. However, Zelenskyy is convinced that Vladimir Putin "would not be able to preserve his life" if nuclear weapons were used.
