The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (MFA) has urged international partners to recognise the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people and to prevent further war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide by Russia.

On 26 November, Ukraine honors the memory of millions of victims of the crimes of the totalitarian Communist regime – the mass artificial famine of 1921-1923 in Ukraine; the Holodomor of 1932-1933, the genocide of the Ukrainian people; and the mass artificial famine in Ukraine in 1946-1947, the Ministry noted.

For decades, the totalitarian regime in the Kremlin has done everything possible to hide the consequences of the repressive policy towards Ukrainians from the international community, silenced, distorted and denied the facts in order to avoid responsibility for the crimes committed, the ministry added.

Quote: "Today, on the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, the goal of Russia's genocidal war of aggression is no different from the goal of the genocide of 1932-1933 – [it’s] the destruction of the Ukrainian nation and its statehood. By continuing terrorist attacks on critical infrastructure facilities, destroying historical and cultural heritage, forcibly transferring Ukrainian children to Russian territory, the Russian Federation is waging a war against Ukrainian identity", the Ministry emphasised.

Details: The political and ideological agenda of the Stalinist era, in particular, the imposition of the image of the "hostile West" and the denial of the existence of Ukraine as an independent state, are now especially actively reproduced in the totalitarian policy of today's Russia, the Foreign Ministry stressed.

Quote: "The totalitarian Communist regime committed massive famines, and Putin's regime is conducting worldwide "hunger games". Hundreds of millions of people in Africa and Asia have already suffered from the destruction of agricultural infrastructure and blocking of Ukrainian grain exports by the Russian Federation. As in 1932-1933, the NKVD seized the last food supplies from Ukrainians, so in 2022, the Russian occupation troops are robbing Ukrainian elevators and exporting Ukrainian grain. By obstructing the work of the Black Sea Grain Agreement, the Kremlin uses food as a weapon to implement its aggressive policy. A number of countries and regions are on the verge of famine because of Russia's war against Ukraine.

Russia's aggression against Ukraine proves that unpunished evil and unrecognised historical mistakes are returning in our time – on a worse scale", the statement says.

Details: The MFA urged international partners to restore historical justice – to recognize the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people and to prevent further war crimes, as well as crimes against humanity and genocide by Russia.

Background: On 24 November, the Upper House of the Irish Parliament and the Parliament of Moldova recognised the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people, and the Romanian Parliament recognised the Holodomor as a crime against humanity and the Ukrainian people.

The Bundestag has prepared the recognition of the Holodomor as genocide; they are to vote next week.
