New EU sanctions against Russia to be approved until February 24 "in any case" – Borrel

The EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, expressed confidence that the 10th package of sanctions against Russia will be adopted by the anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Quote: "Today we discussed the 10th package of sanctions, which was submitted to the Council of the European Union for approval. We are on the way to approving it, and I believe that this will happen in the coming hours or days – in any case, before 24 February," Borrel stressed.

"The 10th package of sanctions will be approved in writing by 24 February. By then, the obstacles that still exist will be overcomed. This commitment was made by all the ministers, the package received significant support from everyone," he added.

Note: On 15 February, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, submitted an official proposal regarding the 10th package of sanctions against Russia. The proposal calls for further export bans worth more than 11 billion euros to deprive the Russian economy of critical technologies and industrial goods.

According to media reports, the new package of sanctions provides for restrictions on more than 60 Russian officials and politicians, some of whom are believed to have been involved in a campaign to forcibly export Ukrainian children to Russia.

Among the Russians on the sanctions list are deputy ministers, parliamentarians, senators, prosecutors, military commanders and propagandists whose names are not known to the general public. In particular, the commander of the Russian Airborne Forces, Mikhail Teplinsky, who was present during the shootings of civilians in Bucha, and Colonel General Sergei Karakaev, who was responsible for the shelling of civilian infrastructure.

The head of the Russian Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation organisation, Yevgeny Primakov, deputy heads of the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media, Rossiya Segodnya media holdings and Patriot media group, which are involved in the propaganda distribution, Alfa-Bank, Rosbank, Tinkoff Bank etc. – a total of 28 new legal entities.
