US provides Ukraine with a US$1.25 billion grant

On Monday, 27 February, Ukraine received the first tranche of a US$1.25 billion grant from the United States.

The Prime Minister Of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, and the Minister of Finance, Serhii Marchenko, met with Janet Yellen, US Secretary of the Treasury. The parties discussed the financial needs of Ukraine for this year, sanctions against the Russian Federation and the rapid recovery.

Janet Yellen assured Ukrainian officials of further support for Ukraine. The United States has confirmed its intention to provide Ukraine with US$9.9 billion in 2023.

Recently, the US announced the provision of US$2.5 billion to Ukraine in February and March 2023. Ukraine received the first tranche of US$1.25 billion today. The second tranche will be transferred in March.

The grant will be directed to reimburse state budget expenditures to provide pension payments, housing subsidies, payments to low-income families, persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons, child support for single mothers, and support in connection with pregnancy and childbirth.

It will also be used for payments to employees of higher education institutions, as well as payments to employees of first response services (State Emergency Service of Ukraine).
