Details: Kuleba clarified that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had consulted the Ministry of Internal Affairs about this.

The Minister said that currently, the Ukrainian Ministry has received more than 20 appeals from citizens of Ukraine who cannot get in touch with their relatives in Turkey.

Quote: "As of this moment, we do not have any information that Ukrainian citizens have been injured in the earthquake, but the rubble is still being cleared, so this information will be updated."

Background:

  • Several powerful earthquakes, one reaching the magnitude of 7.7, rocked the southeast of Turkey early on 6 February. A second wave measured at 7.6 struck nearby later in the afternoon, causing additional damage and destruction.
  • As of now, over 1,500 casualties have been reported in Turkey and over 500 in Syria.
  • European countries have sent over 10 rescue missions to Turkey. Ukraine has also offered to help Turkey deal with the aftermath of the earthquake.
  • Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has received information that 24 Ukrainian citizens who were in the affected provinces could not be contacted; their whereabouts are currently being established.
