He said that power engineers, emergency workers from the State Emergency Service, police, and medical staff are involved in the work of the headquarters. This refers to a 200-kilometre zone around the ZNPP.

"We will clearly provide guidance and all the rules of procedure," Klymenko said.

He noted that all radiation measurement equipment available in Ukraine is ready for use.

Exercises involving road closures and the deployment of medical checkpoints will be conducted in the coming days.

Meanwhile, citizens should be aware that during the "situation that may emerge", they should not leave their shelters unless allowed to do so. Every citizen should lock themselves in their rooms, shut down ventilation systems and turn off the air conditioning. Sealing all possible air holes in houses or apartments with a damp cloth or tape is also necessary.

Citizens should wear respirators or medical masks if staying outside.

"As for the ZNPP, the radioactive background that may be present in the air after any activities will last for about one day. We will reduce the radioactive level by 80% within a day," he said.

All citizens who want to leave the area will be evacuated, the Interior Minister said. He estimated that this would be about 500,000 people.

"That's all you need to know. And, of course, follow the media...", said Klymenko.

Background:
