Details: The launch of the green corridor was a key topic in the negotiations with the participation of Serhii Derkach (Deputy Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development), Mircea Păscăluță (State Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova), and Ionel Scrioșteanu (State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania).
The Ministry for Restoration said that the proposal to introduce a green corridor includes a number of measures for all three countries.
Quote from Derkach: "First of all, it is about joint checks between Ukraine and Moldova and coordinated checks between Moldova and Romania. Thanks to this solution, we will be able to reduce the number of stops for trucks and thus speed up the checking process. This solution will allow us to address the issue of comprehensive infrastructure development on the Ukraine-Moldova-Romania border."
More details: These checkpoints are located close to each other and are strategic for goods travelling by road to ports, including Romania's Galați.
A number of other steps are needed to create a green corridor, including the development of the Reni checkpoint. This will allow representatives of Moldova's inspection authorities to carry out all the necessary procedures when leaving Ukraine.
The plan to launch the green corridor also means the reconstruction of the Reni – Galați road and its expansion from 2 to 4 lanes, as well as additional technical equipment at the checkpoints. All these measures are possible with the support of the decision of all three parties.
Currently, the Reni – Giurgiuleşti checkpoint allows about 50 trucks to pass through per day. However, it is one of the key road crossing points leading to Romanian ports.
Quote from Derkach: "The key goal of developing the infrastructure of this checkpoint and the green corridor is to increase the actual throughput by at least 5 times."
Background:
The Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) ratified amendments to the agreement between Ukraine and Moldova on railway transport on 24 August. The adopted amendments will allow transit traffic on the section Etulia (Moldova) – Reni (Ukraine) – Giurgiuleşti (Moldova), without a three-day stop in Reni.
