Ukraine appeals to UN Security Council over Russia’s recent massive attack

Ukraine and 30 other UN members have called for an emergency Security Council meeting in response to Russia's frenzied attack on Ukrainian cities on Friday 29 December.

Details: Ukraine, along with thirty-two other states, has requested that the Ecuadorian presidency of the UN Security Council "convene an urgent UNSC meeting to address Russia’s missile and drone attack against Ukraine, which resulted in multiple civilian casualties and heavy destruction of civilian infrastructure".

Background: 

  • On the night of 28-29 December, Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine. Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa, Lviv, Zaporizhzhia and other cities were hit. 
  • According to the latest information, the massive Russian strike resulted in at least 30 deaths and over 160 injured.
  • The attack has been condemned by a number of European countries. UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps announced that "hundreds of British-made air defence missiles" would be sent to Kyiv.
  • Speaking of the Russian attack on Ukraine, US President Joe Biden emphasised that Congress must act quickly to approve more aid for Kyiv.
  • Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba held a telephone conversation with Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, from the Foreign Ministry’s bomb shelter during the air-raid alert.
