"If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault – which it might not be – but if I think it was Russia’s fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia," Trump said during an early morning phone call with NBC News on Sunday 30 March.

Trump said this would mean that if you buy oil from Russia, you won’t be able to do business in the United States. A tariff of between 25% and 50% would be imposed on all Russian oil.

He added that tariffs on Russia would be introduced within a month if no ceasefire agreement is reached.

At the same time, the US president reiterated that he has "a very good relationship" with Putin and said that "the anger dissipates quickly ... if he does the right thing".
