Poland has activated its air force and placed its ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems on full alert due to a large-scale Russian missile attack on Ukraine.

Details: Operational Command noted that due to active operations by Russian strategic aircraft, "Polish and allied aircraft have begun to operate in our airspace".

Details: Operational Command officials added that they were monitoring the current situation and that the forces and assets under their control were fully prepared to respond immediately.

Background:

  • On Sunday morning, Russia launched a ballistic missile strike on Kyiv, causing fires and injuring three people.
  • At 04:57, an air-raid warning was issued across almost all of Ukraine due to activity by Russian strategic aircraft.
  • On the evening of 4 April, Russian troops launched a ballistic missile strike on a residential area in Kryvyi Rih, killing at least 18 people, including 9 children.
  • Afterwards, US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink tweeted: "Horrified that tonight a ballistic missile struck near a playground and restaurant in Kryvyi Rih," without mentioning Russia in the message.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was "unpleasantly" surprised by the US Embassy’s reaction to the Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih.
