Quote: "Russia is masking its failed summer offensive with terror attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.

We keep supporting Ukraine as long as needed: finalising the next sanctions package, ensuring financing, providing weapons.

Russia will not stop until forced to."

Background:

  • On the night of 4-5 October, Russia launched more than 50 missiles and around 500 attack drones against Ukraine targeting Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa and Kirovohrad oblasts.
  • At least five people were killed and another 10 injured.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasised that Russian forces were targeting essential civilian infrastructure and urged Ukraine's allies to provide stronger air defences.
  • President of Moldova Maia Sandu has called for increased and faster assistance to Ukraine following Russia's latest attacks.
  • Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described as "shocking" the footage from the Shostka railway station in Sumy Oblast, where Russian forces attacked passenger trains.
