Kharkiv faces its hardest winter of the war, says Mayor Terekhov

Russian forces have destroyed two transformer substations that supply the city of Kharkiv, making the coming winter the toughest since the war began.

Quote: "Over the past few days, the enemy has destroyed two transformer substations that powered our city. This is a serious blow to the capacities of Kharkivoblenergo [the electricity distributor of Kharkiv Oblast – ed.]. Looking at the pace of attacks, it is already clear that the coming winter will be the hardest for Kharkiv in all years of the war."
Details: The mayor added that electricity has now been restored to most homes.
Quote: "While about 22,000 consumers remained without power overnight, now it is just around 3,500."
More details: Terekhov praised the nonstop coordinated efforts of Kharkivoblenergo energy workers and the city's utility services, who have combined forces to keep electricity and public services running reliably for all residents.
Quote: "Of course, there are the city's capacities, Kharkivoblenergo's resources and the country's energy system – but all of these are limited. We must face the truth: Russia will not stop its attempts at terror. It will continue trying to take lives, leaving our people in cold and darkness."
More details: Terekhov added that new strikes on critical infrastructure could occur at any moment, capable of destroying months of restoration work.
Quote: "Such situations have already happened more than once and continue to happen. We must always be ready for anything.
After each attack, we repair boiler houses, fix heating networks and water supply, and restore generation. We will do this again and again – as long as it takes to ensure Kharkiv residents have light, heat and water, and that the city lives, works and remains strong."
Background:
- It was reported earlier that Russian troops have attacked energy infrastructure in one of the districts in the city of Kharkiv. Kharkivoblenergo specialist employees began to address the aftermath of the strike as soon as conditions on the ground were safe.
- Russian forces struck an energy facility in the Ichnia district of Chernihiv Oblast on the night of 5-6 October.
- On 3 October, Russia carried out its heaviest strike on Ukraine's gas production facilities since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
