Details: In this context, Mathernova emphasised that EU leaders are trying to "move the process" forward.
"At some point, you will have to reach unanimity, but that should not stop the reforms going forward… I think that a lot of work can be done without having a formal vote," she added.
Commenting on the possibility of "changing the rules" to advance Ukraine's accession talks, the ambassador noted that "what is fixed in the treaties cannot be changed".
"And another thing is internal rules. There is quite a bit of scope and that's what we are playing with now. And we hope to exploit as much as possible during the Danish presidency," she said.
Background:
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier stated that Ukraine would join the European Union regardless of the position of Hungary's PM Viktor Orbán.
- At the same time, Viktor Orbán recently reiterated that Hungarians do not want to be in the same union with Ukrainians so as "not to share their fate" – which, according to Orbán, is to be next to Russia. The Hungarian prime minister also claimed that Ukraine is not a sovereign state, as its bills are paid by the European Union countries.
