Details: During a conversation with journalists, Trump spoke about his recent phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and his plans to meet him in Hungary. According to Trump, the talks aim to find a way to end the war.
"I came into this situation... I didn't start this war. This is a Biden deal, and I came into it and it was a mess. It could have led to World War III. In my opinion, this could have led to World War III. That won't happen," he emphasised.
Trump noted that he intends to "save souls" and promote peace in Europe. He believes that Biden's administration made strategic mistakes that led to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while such aggression would not have happened during his presidency.
"I'm doing it to save souls. That's all I'm doing it for. I'm not doing it for us. We have an ocean between us. I'm doing it also to help Europe. They want to have it ended, but they're unable to do it. I'm able to do it," Trump said.
Separately, the US president touched on the topic of relations between Ukrainian and Russian leaders, describing them as "terrible", which makes organising joint meetings difficult. He also confirmed that he had discussed the supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine with Putin, noting that the Russian ruler "didn't like the idea".
Background:
- The US and Russian leaders held their first conversation in nearly two months on Thursday. Following the call, Donald Trump announced that they would meet again, this time in Budapest.
- On 17 October, Trump is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with the possible delivery of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine among the main topics for discussion.
- The Kremlin stated that Putin had told Trump that the Tomahawks would not change the situation on the battlefield but would damage relations between Russia and the United States.
- In addition, Trump believes that now is not the best time to impose new sanctions against Russia, as it could complicate or even derail his planned meeting with Putin.
