Quote: "I don't know who is writing what, but we have never used American long-range weapons against critical targets on Russian territory. This is important."
Details: Zelenskyy said Ukraine has used various weapons "that have long-range capability" in the territory of combat operations or in areas where Russian forces were preparing to launch combat missions.
He also stressed that Crimea and the east are Ukrainian territories. "And we cannot talk about the use of a weapon, not only of Ukrainian production, against the territory of Crimea, the occupied territories, as if that is Russian territory," the president said.
Background:
- On 17 October, Zelenskyy travelled to the White House to meet US President Donald Trump following two consecutive phone conversations. The meeting was planned to discuss highly sensitive issues, including the possible supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
- The day before the meeting, Trump called Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. He said afterwards that Putin "didn't like the idea" of Tomahawks being provided to Ukraine, adding that it "may not be perfect timing" to impose secondary sanctions on buyers of Russian energy.
- CNN later reported that Trump had made it clear in a private conversation with Zelenskyy that he is not currently considering providing Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles.
- On 23 October, Zelenskyy called the issue of the potential supply of Tomahawks to Ukraine "very sensitive", but pointed out that decisions on sanctions had once seemed impossible too.
