Quote from North Korean propaganda: "The combat successes and brilliant feats of the fighters of the republic's armed forces, achieved at the cost of blood and life during the military operation to liberate Kursk Oblast of the brotherly Russian Federation, are a marvellous legend of victory in war that will be written as a special page in the history of building a Juche-based army and the anti-imperialist revolutionary struggle. They are also a great achievement in demonstrating the invincibility of the Korea-Russia relationship, which was forged through blood and continues to strengthen, laying the foundation for the existence, development and eternal prosperity of the two countries – the DPRK and the Russian Federation."

Background:

  • In April 2025, both North Korea and Russia confirmed the participation of North Korean troops in Russia's war against Ukraine. It was specifically reported that DPRK soldiers were deployed in Russia's Kursk Oblast, parts of which were then under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
  • Both countries stated that this cooperation was based on a mutual defence agreement signed by Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un in June last year.
  • The General Staff of Ukraine has said that the Russian command is deploying North Korean military units to support operations in Sumy Oblast.
