NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said that the decision to provide Ukraine with specific types of weapons is entirely up to each individual ally and noted that the provision of Tomahawk missiles remains under consideration by US President Donald Trump.

Rutte reiterated that it is "up to each ally to decide which type of weapons they want to deliver to Ukraine".

He also stated that Ukraine has the right to strike inside Russia to defend itself.

Rutte added that in July, Trump "decided to open the floodgates" with regard to providing Ukraine with defensive weapons, including equipment which only the US can decide to provide, such as interceptors for Patriot systems.

"The issue [the provision of Tomahawk missiles – ed.] remains under review by the president [Trump], and this is up to the US to decide," Rutte said.

Background:

  • In an address to EU leaders on 23 October, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made it clear that Ukraine is counting on receiving long-range missiles, including Tomahawks, from European nations.
  • The media reported earlier that Trump indicated in a private conversation with Zelenskyy that he is not currently considering supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
