Russian forces have systematically bombed coal-fired power stations, gas storage facilities and substations in an effort to freeze Ukraine this winter, with each new strike making it harder for Ukrainians to get through the season with sufficient electricity and heat.

Details: Bild reported that 55-60% of Ukraine's gas infrastructure has been damaged. In October, three separate days of missile attacks destroyed part of Ukraine's heat generation capacity. One Naftogaz gas facility has sustained six strikes.

Bild cited Serhii Koretskyi, CEO of Naftogaz of Ukraine, as saying that the Russians will not stop and everyone should keep energy use to a minimum.

Bild explained that if the grid collapses, Ukraine is at risk of a catastrophically cold winter, citing unnamed officials in Kyiv as saying that "the coming winter will be the hardest [yet]".

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called on Western allies to support Ukraine, and Economy Minister Katherina Reiche is committed to topping up the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. Germany's contribution stands at €390 million, and a further €60 million is earmarked.

Background:
