Details: Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reiterated that the Orion (also known as Inokhodets) is an attack and reconnaissance UAV produced by the Kronshtadt Group, a Russian firm under Western sanctions.

"The one-tonne aircraft with a straight wing and V-shaped tailplane can carry up to 250 kg of payload, which may include aerial-survey systems, electronic-intelligence modules, electro-optical systems, KAB-20 guided bombs, Kh-50 and Kh-UAV missiles and others," DIU noted.

In addition, the Orion is a carrier for Russia's new S8000 Banderol cruise missile. DIU said the Orion has a range of up to 250 km (up to 300 km with a repeater) and an endurance of up to 30 hours.

"Because of such technical specifications and its competitive cost, Russian media loudly dubbed it a 'Bayraktar killer'," DIU added.

As for the 43 Russian companies involved in producing the Orion, a third are not yet under sanctions imposed by any member of the international sanctions coalition. DIU said this enables the continued supply of critical components, thereby prolonging Russia's war against Ukraine.

The companies identified include manufacturers of electro-optical systems, ground communication stations and polymer-composite materials for the airframe.

"Developments such as the Orion pose a threat not only to Ukraine but to the civilised world as a whole: the technologies and components may be transferred to Russia's allies, particularly Iran and North Korea, expanding the risk of their military use in other regions," DIU warned.

It stressed that companies supplying products for Russia's defence industrial base must be cut off from international supply chains for raw materials and components.

DIU believes that the synchronisation of sanctions and strict enforcement are key mechanisms to deprive the aggressor of access to critical technologies and slow its military capabilities.
