Russia seeks to regain its influence over Moldova, says Moldovan president

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has said that Russia is attempting to regain its influence over Moldova by installing people loyal to Moscow in key state positions.

Details: According to Sandu, Russia cannot touch Moldova at the moment because Ukraine is resisting.
"But the political and strategic risk remains high. Moscow wants to install loyal people in key Moldovan institutions who will follow the Kremlin's directives rather than act in the interests of our citizens," she explained.
Sandu stressed that such influence has been visible in previous elections, during which Russia has attempted to gain power in Chișinău in order to use Moldova against Ukraine, Romania and other countries in the region.
If Moscow were to gain control, Moldova could become a grey zone, vulnerable to money laundering, corruption schemes and security threats on Ukraine's border, Sandu warned.
Background:
- Gheorghiță Vlad, Chief of Romania's Defence Staff, has stated that Romania, as a close ally, is prepared to come to Moldova's aid if the country faces aggression from Russia.
- However, Romanian President Nicușor Dan has said he does not believe Russia will attack Moldova.
