Details: The Italian minister was requested to provide feedback on the "peace plan" proposed by the United States that had been leaked to the media outlets and is considered highly unfavourable for Ukraine.
"It is difficult to comment on leaks to journalists," Tajani said upon his arrival at a meeting of the EU states' foreign ministers in Brussels.
He mentioned that Italy will thoroughly examine this plan when it's presented.
Quote: "As has always been said, Europe must have a role [in the peace process – ed.]. Ukraine also represents a security barrier for Europe. If Ukraine falls, the risks for Europe increase and we absolutely cannot accept or allow this."
Background:
- On 19 November, a number of American media outlets reported on a new 28-point "peace plan" that Trump's team had developed in consultation with the Russians.
- These reports mentioned that the plan envisages handing over the entire Donbas region to Russia. In addition, Ukraine must reduce its arsenal of weapons, reduce its army by half, and accept Russian as its second state language.
- Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated that the European Union welcomes efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, but any such plan must involve both Ukraine and Europe.
- Jean-Noël Barrot, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, underlined the importance of ensuring a just and reliable peace in ending the war in Ukraine.
