Russian ruler Vladimir Putin has said he is not interested in Russia returning to the G7, which was previously the G8 before Moscow was expelled following its aggression against Ukraine in 2014.

Details: The Kremlin leader said that Russia has no interest in rejoining the G7.

"I will not go into detail, but in the past I had essentially stopped attending these meetings," Putin said.

He went on to mention the shrinking share of G7 countries in the global economy and Germany's recession.

  • The idea of Russia returning to the format – effectively restoring it to the G8 – appeared in the initial version of the Trump team's "peace plan".
  • German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has rejected the possibility of Russia rejoining the G7.
