Zelenskyy speaks with Italian PM on peace process and support for energy sector

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has held a conversation with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who confirmed her country's readiness to provide assistance to support Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Details: The Italian government reported that Meloni had held a phone call with Zelenskyy on 7 December "ahead of a series of visits he will be making to London, Brussels and Rome over the coming days as part of his contacts with key European leaders on the peace process in Ukraine".

Meloni expressed Italy's solidarity with Ukraine following a new wave of indiscriminate Russian attacks on civilian facilities and informed Zelenskyy about the delivery of emergency assistance to support both energy infrastructure and the population.

Power generators provided by Italian companies will be sent to Ukraine in the coming weeks.

Meloni also reiterated her support for the ongoing negotiation process and for the US efforts to find a path that could lead to a just and lasting peace.

Updated: Zelenskyy later said that he had had a "very substantive" conversation with Meloni and thanked her for the attention to diplomatic efforts and for Italy's support of Ukraine's energy infrastructure with equipment that will be delivered in the coming days.

Quote from Zelenskyy: "We discussed the outcomes of our engagement with the American side, as well as the existing prospects and challenges. There is still work to be done together to ensure that Russia genuinely commits to ending the war. Italy clearly supports the need for real security and for preventing any renewed outbreaks of war. We are preparing joint efforts in Europe to make diplomacy work."
