The Kremlin has said that remarks by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about preparing for a war with Russia are irresponsible and show that he does not understand the scale of destruction caused by World War II.

Details: In a speech in Berlin on Thursday, Rutte said that NATO must be "prepared for the scale of war our grandparents or great-grandparents endured" and stated that "we are Russia's next target".
The Kremlin has repeatedly rejected remarks by NATO and some European leaders that Russia is planning to attack a NATO member as "nonsense" used by European leaders to fuel anti-Russian hysteria.
Quote from Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov: "This seems like a statement by a representative of a generation that has managed to forget what World War Two was actually like.
They have no understanding, and unfortunately, Mr Rutte, making such irresponsible statements, simply does not understand what he is talking about."
Background:
- Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó had earlier accused Rutte of "stoking military tensions" over his words that Alliance member states could become Russia's next target.
- On 2 December, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said that if Europe "suddenly wants to fight and starts, we'll be ready at a moment's notice".
