EU foreign policy chief says Donbas is not Putin's final goal

Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, is convinced that Russian ruler Vladimir Putin will not stop even if he gains full control of Donbas.

Details: Kallas said that territorial concessions to Russia would only strengthen Putin's desire to seize more territory.
Quote: "We all know that Donbas isn't Putin's endgame. If he gets it, he will want more. Concessions should be made by the aggressor, not the victim. There is no moral equivalence between the two sides."
Details: Kallas stressed that any peace agreement must include strong security guarantees for Ukraine that would deter Russia from attempting another attack.
"Any peace deal must include strong security guarantees. As Ukraine has been pressured into giving up NATO, these will be the only safeguard capable of stopping Russia from reinvading," she said.
Background:
- Earlier, AFP reported that during talks in Berlin on Sunday 14 December, US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner pressed Ukrainian representatives to give up the part of Donbas still under Kyiv's control.
- Following this, Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Serhii Kyslytsia urged the public not to trust anonymous sources on the US position in the negotiations.
- Rustem Umierov, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, said he expects that Kyiv and Washington will have agreed on common positions by the end of the day, bringing peace closer.
