The document signed by Trump provides for annual military spending of US$901 billion.

As for Ukraine, the document provides for US$800 million – US$400 million in 2026 and US$400 million in 2027 – under the security assistance initiative, which envisages the purchase of American weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Background:

  • On 17 December, the US Senate approved the National Defense Authorization Act for 2026 by an overwhelming majority, providing for a record defence budget.
  • The bill also provides for US$400 million for Pentagon efforts to arm and equip the Ukrainian army, despite Trump's attempts to put pressure on Kyiv to reach a deal with Moscow and end the war.
