Ukraine has received 1,003 bodies that the Russian side claims belong to Ukrainian service members.

Repatriation measures have been made possible as a result of joint work by staff of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Joint Centre at the Security Service of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Persons Missing in Special Circumstances, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and other bodies of Ukraine's security and defence sector."

Details: They also expressed gratitude to the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Central Directorate for Civil-Military Cooperation of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Joint Centre for Civil-Military Cooperation Support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

At the same time, the Russian Federation reported that, under the Istanbul agreements, it had allegedly handed over 1,000 bodies of Ukrainian servicemembers to Ukraine and received 26 bodies of Russian servicemen.

Background:

  • On 23 October, 1,000 bodies that the Russian side claims belong to Ukrainian servicemembers were returned to Ukraine from Russia.
  • On 19 August, 1,000 bodies of fallen soldiers were also returned to Ukraine.
  • Repatriation measures took place on 20 November as a result of which 1,000 bodies were returned to Ukraine that, according to the Russian Federation, belong to Ukrainian servicemembers.
