Details: Putin warned that if threats emerged to Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia would "eliminate" them.
Quote: "Everyone must understand and realise that actions of this kind would simply lead to an escalation of the conflict unprecedented to date, push it to an entirely different level and expand it – all the way to a large-scale armed conflict."
Background:
- Lithuania previously raised the possibility of halting transit to and from Kaliningrad due to incidents involving meteorological balloons drifting in from Belarus.
- Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda suggested closing the border and restricting transit to Kaliningrad over the use of such balloons for smuggling contraband.
