Ukraine's foreign minister reminds Orbán of Hungary's alliance with Nazis during World War II

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has responded to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who had cast doubt on the fact that it was Russia that started the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Details: "They calmly have breakfast at home, drink their coffee and think how morally right it is to help a small country that has been attacked, though it's not so small, and it's not clear who attacked whom, but in any case, we are now helping a country that has been subjected to violence, and it costs us nothing. But in the end, they will pay," Orbán said.
"Just as 'not clear' as it was for Hungaryʼs leadership in 1939," Sybiha wrote in response.
The minister hinted to Orbán at an episode during World War II, when Hungary was allied with the Nazis. Hungary joined the Axis Pact in 1940, took part in the invasion of Yugoslavia, and fought against the USSR on the Eastern Front, suffering significant losses, especially after the defeat at Stalingrad, which led to the occupation of the country by Germany in 1944 and further fighting with the Red Army, ending with the liberation of Hungary in 1945.
It is worth noting that Hungarian Regent Miklós Horthy, recognising Germany's impending defeat, began secret negotiations with the UK to withdraw Hungary from the war. However, when Horthy attempted this in 1944, German troops occupied Hungary.
Background:
- Earlier, the Hungarian prime minister called the EU loan to Ukraine "an extremely bad decision" and "money wasted."
- The European Council agreed to provide Ukraine with a €90 billion loan for 2026-2027, based on EU borrowing on capital markets and backed by EU budget reserves. However, Hungary, Slovakia and Czechia refused to take part in the scheme.
