Details: Zelenskyy spoke about recent diplomatic efforts and noted that progress is moving "at a fairly rapid pace".
Quote: "Our team in Florida has been working with the American side. European representatives were also invited. These negotiations are constructive and this matters. Much depends on whether Russia feels the need to end the war for real."
Details: Zelenskyy added that, unfortunately, the only genuine signals coming from Russia remain negative – in the form of assaults on the front line, Russian war crimes and strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.
The president also said that after the work carried out in the United States by the Ukrainian diplomatic team, it would be necessary to hold consultations in a broader format with European partners as well.
Zelenskyy thanked Norway for its readiness to continue assisting both with pressure on Russia and with recovery after Russian strikes, particularly in the energy sector.
Background:
- Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, claimed that amendments proposed by Europe and Ukraine to the US draft "peace plan" hinder the prospects of reaching a long-term peace.
- On 20 December, Zelenskyy said that the United States had proposed that "peace talks" be held with representatives of Ukraine and Russia and possibly European countries.
- On the evening of 19 December, Rustem Umierov, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, said that a meeting between the Ukrainian negotiating delegation and US and European partners had concluded.
